Scholarship Recipients

$1,500 MCREA Scholarship – Kyle Pollock, Wiggins High School

Kyle is a 4.0 GPA student and valedictorian of his class.  He has been very successful in high school wrestling with a career record of 104 wins and 9 losses.  Kyle was also an All-State football player and a varsity letterman in track for the Tigers.  His academic achievements include National Honor Roll, National Honor Society and University of Colorado “Outstanding Junior Award”.  In the fall of 2009, Kyle was selected for the very prestigious Wendy’s High School Heisman National Male Award.  He has served as class president, vice president, and treasurer.  Additionally, Kyle was honored by the Wiggins Town Council as their “Citizen of the Month” for March, 2009.  Kyle has been accepted by Stanford University to study civil engineering and continue his wrestling career at the collegiate level.  His parents are John and Lori Pollock from Wiggins.

$1,000 MCREA Scholarship – Nathaniel Thompson, Brush High School

Nathaniel, son of Harry and Colleen Thompson of Snyder, is ranked first in his class at Brush High School with a 4.0 grade point average.  He has served as both class president and vice president, is a four-year member of the Interact Club (a community service youth organization associated with the Rotary Club), and has participated in the Morgan-Washington Bi-County Science Fair his entire high school career.  Nate is a member of National Honor Society, the Sportsman Club, the Snyder Pioneers 4-H Club, and served as manager for the Beetdiggers high school basketball team.  A four year participant for the Knowledge Bowl, Nate’s varsity team placed second at the Colorado 3A division competition last year.  Nate attends the Brush First Church of the Nazarene and plays drums in the praise band.  He plans to attend the Colorado School of Mines and study mechanical engineering.

$1,000 MCREA Scholarship – Isabella Heepke, Fort Morgan High School

A 4.13 weighted GPA student and a member of National Honor Society, Isabella is ranked second in her class at Fort Morgan High School.  She is a four year participant in the Mustang’s Spirit Club and International Club, which allowed her to go on a trip to England in the summer of 2007.  Isabella is also the founder of the school’s ‘Green Team’, which is in charge of the school’s recycling program and other programs to make FMHS a more sustainable place.  Athletically, Isabella has seen success in swimming, both for the Marlin Swim Team (she was a nine year seasonal state qualifier) and the Sterling Swim Team, where she was a First Team Academic All-American for the 2008-2009 season.  Outside of school, Isabella and her brother operate M&B Produce, a fruit and vegetable delivery business.  Her parents are Daniel Heepke and Gina Keenan-Heepke of Fort Morgan.

$1,000 Basin Electric Scholarship – Lauren Mertens, Prairie High School

Lauren carries a weighted cumulative 4.0 grade point average at Prairie High School and is also listed first in her class.  She’s been active with several school activities, including student council and varsity sports (volleyball, basketball and track).  Most notably, Lauren has been very involved with the Prairie FFA, serving as the chapter reporter as a junior and president her senior year. She is an accomplished public speaker, winning top honors in the Colorado FFA Prepared Public Speaking contest and earning a bronze award at the national level.  Outside of school, Lauren has worked for Mertens Bros. Inc., as well as running her own photography and house cleaning businesses.  She is planning to attend Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, majoring in agricultural education and communications.  Her parents are James and Danelle Mertens of New Raymer.

$500 Tri-State Generation Scholarship – Sarah Goss, Brush High School

Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Cathy Goss of Brush, is listed at the top of her class with a 4.0 GPA.  She has been very involved with school activities, including band, athletics, Student Council, and National Honor Society.  Sarah ran track and cross-country all four of her high school years, breaking several school records and receiving All-Conference and All-State Honorable Mention honors in both sports.  She has been first-chair for three years in the honor band, this year selected for the CSU Honor Band.  Sarah is currently serving as president of the Sportsman Club, coordinating several community service activities as well as fun activities.  She has a number of awards to her credit in her local 4-H chapter, most recently winning overall high individual in consumer judging at the state level.  Sarah plans to study mathematics at either the University of Northern Colorado or the Colorado School of Mines.

$500 Tri-State Generation Scholarship – Rebecca L. May, Brush High School

A 3.98 GPA student at Brush High School, Rebecca is also enrolled in english, public speaking, algebra and political science classes at Morgan Community College.  A member of National Honor Society and Student Council, she is also very active with the Brush FFA, serving as chapter president, vice president, secretary and junior president.  In her local 4-H chapter, Rebecca has served as co-president, vice president and secretary.  She also functions as a monthly co-host for the morning show on Farm Radio 1010 KSIR.  Rebecca has participated in basketball, volleyball and softball for the Beetdiggers, and as a volunteer reading mentor at Thomson Elementary School.  Her plans are to attend Colorado State University and pursue a degree in Agricultural Business with an emphasis in communications.  Scott and Holly May from Brush are Rebecca’s parents.
